Media and School

18 Jan

So I wanted to wait until I had a full day of classes to make my next media blog post in order to take in account the amount of media during a school day as opposed to a day off. I picked today because it’s my longest day.

Mickey Mouse Monopoly

11 Jan

I watched a documentary last week that I was reminded of when we watched the “Mickey Mouse Monopoly” video in class on monday. It was a documentary about hollywood media mogul Harvey Weinstein called “Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project”. It was very interesting and it dealt a lot with his dealings with Disney studio’s and Michael Eisner. Harvey Weinstein is best known as being the co-founder of Miramax Films which was successful in the 1980’s, and now runs Weinstein Company with his brother since 2005. Miramax was the independent film darling, releasing a string of controversial indie films including some that were given an X-rating by the MPAA, which would be the same as an NC-17 film today. One of Miramax’s most sucessful film distributions was Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (also my favorite movie of all time) leading Miramax to some oscar wins and nominations. Miramax was bought by Disney in 1993, leading to some drama with disney studios when they opposed some of the more controversial films, like “Kids”(1995) and “Fahrenheit 9/11” (2004) refusing to distribute them because of their content. Disney is notorious for censorship in films. Weinstein had to turn to other studio’s to distribute the films that Disney would not allow him to distribute!

Technology

10 Jan

So I wanted to wait until I had a day off to write my first post, as I wanted to see how much media I used while I was at home and not School. I’ll start with last night. First of I should say that I have really bad insomnia, and usually only sleep 4-5 hours a night. Without technology I would probably die of boredom laying in bed for hours not being able to sleep. I’m really dependent on movies and tv at night when I can’t sleep. I usually lay in bed until 2 or 3 am watching Movies or Netflix. So last Night I was up until about 4 am watching Heroes on Netflix, which I’m totally addicted to. I had never watched it while it was on, I’m halfway through season 3 and i just started it last week. I watch Netflix on my xbox. I probably couldn’t live without Netflix, it’s so awesome. So I would say my Xbox is my most used media, between Netflix and playing video games. I’ve been playing Arkham Asylum lately, which is a crazy good game. Got it for christmas and I’m halfway through it now. My next most used media would be my iPhone 4S. It probably never leaves my hands, I’m actually using it right now while I’m also on my laptop typing this blog. Since I started thinking about my technology use for this blog, I realize that I watch a lot of television, my television is ALWAYS on when i’m home, even if i’m on my laptop it’s on in the background. There is always a movie on or a tv show, or something.

Introduction!

9 Jan

So here is my blog for Media Living, detailing my media exposure throughout the course. I must say I am excited about this, as I basically do the same thing on my twitter which you can find here, except I post about everything on there, and this will be just stuff relating to the university course. Here I will be posting about the media I am exposed to, and expect a lot as I’m pretty dependent on technology. I’m a huge movie buff, I watch a ridiculous amount of movies, I also watch a lot of television and play a lot of video games, so expect a lot type of thing of that on my posts. I’m not new to blogging, I’ve had a few over the years that never really stuck, and I just end up using twitter more than anything, I’m actually pretty addicted to it.
